Mexicali Municipality is a municipality (Spaingie: municipio) in the Mexican state o Baja California. Its municipal seat (Spaingie: cabecera municipal) is locatit in the ceety o Mexicali. Accordin tae the 2010 census, it haed a population o 956,826 inhabitants, an accordin tae the 2000 census, it haed 764,602 inhabitants, which means an increase o 22.5%. The municipality haes an aurie o 13,700 km² (5,300 sq mi.) This includes mony smawer ootlyin commonties as well as the ceety o Mexicali. An aw, the islands o Baja California locatit in the Guwf o Californie are pairt o the municipality, amang them the mudflat islands at the mooth o the Colorado River (the lairgest ane being Montague Island), Isla Ángel de la Guarda an the islands o the San Lorenzo Marine Archipelago National Park. Mexicali is the northmaist municipality o Laitin Americae.
The ceety o Mexicali wis foondit in 1903, an its name is a portmanteau o Mexico an California, as is the name o Calexico, Californie athort the border. This is an unusual pair o border ceeties in that Mexicali, on the Mexican side, is far lairger than Calexico, on the U.S. side.
